Sometimes a photographer has the great honor of helping a family capture an extraordinary time or event. This was one of those events, and hands down the most rewarding and humbling shoot of my career. Sweet baby Lucas lay nestled in his grandpa’s arms, while his grandpa cooed and whispered and smiled. Grandma then scooted in, with her arm around her husband, and played with the newborn. This is not an unusual interaction for a newborn shoot, yet always heart warming to see the unconditional love shared between generations. What was unusual, however, was that Grandpa Rob has a terminal illness and we knew his time with Lucas was short. His parents so wisely scheduled the shoot so we could capture the baby with his grandparents. We also got a photo of the three generations of males, photos with both parents and some sweet newborn shots of Lucas by himself. It was a peaceful session with an occasional “ooh and awwww” for the sweet little guy as he fell asleep. The love and warmth between the four adults and baby was beautiful. We knew baby Lucas is a lucky baby. Unfortunately, a little over two weeks later Grandpa Rob passed away. He left a fantastic legacy in Lucas, and we were so fortunate to play a small role in capturing a few moments of baby and grandpa together.
